Tips for train travel in Europe

Thinking of traveling around Europe by train? Many students, couples and groups friends choose train travel as their main method of travel in Europe, and for good reason. Train travel can be a very practical, useful and profitable through this wonderful continent.

However, European train travel can get confusing, especially if you do not know where to start. Here is some tips to help you travel by train in Europe:

First, choose a station information office rather than the ticket window, if you need further information or assistance in planning your trip. The ticket agent is simply there to help you buy your train ticket. Find out if you qualify for any special discount, or if you can reduce your ticket price by taking a train.

If you are looking for ways reduce costs for train travel in Europe, you have few options. First, train travel in southern Europe is almost always cheaper than traveling by train in northern Europe. Second, slower trains are usually significantly cheaper than express trains. Third place, travel at night on long trips will help you save money, time, and hotel / accommodation costs. A rail pass or other train pass may also help you save money, especially if you do a lot of train travel.

When you buy your ticket or pass at the counter, make sure know the time or train number, if you travel first or second class, whether a travel way or round, and when you travel. Keep in mind that express trains often require advance booking and will likely be much more expensive.

Whether or not you have a reservation for a train seat will affect your train travel in Europe. If you have one, you have a number for a car seat. When you're at the station, check each track or on the wall of the train consist, which shows where each car will be numbered when the train enters the in. If you do not have a reserve, it means that you can sit anywhere, but make sure that the seat you choose is not reserved for someone else.

For train travel in Europe, it is not uncommon that you have to "validate" your ticket before you can board through a validation machine that will show you the end of the ticket to put in.

The food options are a train Another question to ponder the extent the European train travel is concerned. The greater the distance, the more likely that the train is to have a restaurant or a cafe car. For medium distances, expect maybe a cart with a few drinks and snacks on it, but regional trains will probably not achieve anything. Consider buying some snacks at the station before boarding to feed you, and reduce costs as well.

High Speed Rail In Europe

high speed rail in europe 3 High Speed Rail In Europe
Why doesn’t Britain have high speed trains?

I’ve just got back from Germany and i went on an ICE train and it was brilliant and having done a little research we seem to be the only country without a proper high-speed rail network (although I don’t think the US has one?). Plus all the trains arrive on time in Germany apparently (kind of predictable). I don’t know much about the rail network or the “benefits” of privatisation but it seems to me that we have a crap network compared with Europe – even the French can do it for god sake.

Is it just down to cost or are there other factors i.e. no demand for it.

Britain’s Inter City services do travel at speeds of up to 125 m.p.h. as opposed to the 186 mph of French TGVs and German ICEs. British governments have never invested money on the scale of those European countries with higher speed networks, but I don’t think our network is “crap” at all. Firstly the British railway network is one of the densest of any country except perhaps the Netherlands, with many rural lines as well as commuter and Inter City main lines. Our services also tend to be very high frequency compared with most countries. Manchester to London every half hour in 2 hours
10 minutes isn’t bad at all when you think that most airlines ask you to check in two hours before their flights; there are 6 trains per hour between Brighton and London, 3 trains per hour between Leicester and London; many of our railway lines are running at urban metro type frequencies. If you take a close look at the French railway system off the brilliant TGV network, you’ll see closed rural lines and services between
various provincial cities running at 3 to 4 hour frequencies where the equivalent services in the U.K. run every 30 minutes. The questioner states that all the trains arrive on time in Germany; well of course they don’t but they are a few percentage points above our 90% national average punctuality rate. We do need some higher speed main lines
and more investment in our rail system through longer franchises, but as someone who several times per week, uses and depends on it to get me all over the U.K. I’m broadly satisfied; most of my journeys are punctual and I am able to get to some very rural and out of the way places by train too.
