Where are the best places to spend an additional 3 days in Europe using the railway system before going to Venice?

We have fallen in love with Italy visiting Rome, Florence, Venice, Genoa and a few years ago and we want to do something different for this trip. We used the train to travel to our means so we could see much of the campaign. This time we have a 12-day Greek cruise initially on the island of Venice. Our plan over Zurich, we thought we could get off the plane and it should jump on a train Switzerland and see (and perhaps part of Germany) and then meander our way down to Italy – maybe only spend one night at each destination or perhaps stay on the Amalfi coast. We love to travel and see so quick as possible! We have a total of 3 nights. Any 4-5 star hotels, landmarks, cities to visit or recommended routes would certainly be appreciated. We expect the purchase of a 3-Country train Pass.

Three days is not enough time to the Amalfi Coast, if you go to Venice from Zurich by train three days. It is just over 10 hours to get from Zurich to Naples, then you need to jump on the Circumvesuviana happening to Sorrento. Hence, it is a bus or boat to go further along the coast. Naples to Venice is another trip h 6.5. Zurich is a nice place to spend a day. From there, you could take the Train to Verona via Milan fairly easily. A day in Verona and a day around Lake Garda is a good choice if you do not been there before. Otherwise, you can take the train from Zurich to Munich. If you do this, you can easily get to Fussen in the train and see Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau Castle for a day, spend a day in Munich itself and take the train to Venice from there. You are probably better just buy individual tickets rather than getting a Eurail pass, especially if you book individual tickets in advance. There is a fee reduced from Zurich to Munich for only € 39, for example, but the fares tend to sell quickly. You do not have to pay a additional surcharge on the train with a Eurail pass. Most of the faster trains require additional postage when you have a Eurail Pass and you may need to have a reserve for certain trains anyway. The Eurail Pass operates as a hop-on, hop-off option when you use slower regional trains that may require a number of changes of train travel long distances.
