I'm backpacking through Europe in the summer of '09, is it worth to buy a Eurail Pass?
I'll stay in Europe from 8 June to July 14 and I will visit London, Amsterdam, Paris, Nice, St. Tropez, Milan, Venice, Florence, Rome, Barcelona and Madrid. I know the Eurail pass does not work in England and I'm planning on flying from Rome to Barcelona … so do I still get a pass for eight days to travel? Also, is it worth to buy one of these cards to international students if I'll stay in Europe for a month? If you have any helpful hints and suggestions on backpacking through Europe, let me know! Thank you!
Eurail passes can be worth the cost if you are under 26 years and not much Travel using slower regional trains. Then, there is no additional cost, but you can end up making many changes and train delays are longer travel. You need to go very long distances (like you). However, if you use the faster trains, there are booking fees and supplements for each train. Here in Italy, the costs range from 5 euros for an Intercity train up to 25 euros (perhaps more for a berth in a train night). You need to make a stop at a gas station to get the reservation before boarding the train – there is a heavy fine if you have not done that. There are often discounted ticket from point to point for high-speed trains higher as long as you purchase tickets at least one day in advance. (The Amica fare on national trains here Smart or tariff for international trains.). You need to plan a rough itinerary and go to individual sites train tickets and compare prices at cost plus supplements Eurail.
