Eurail travel – a way to extend a holiday to Europe

You can effectively extend a touring holiday of Europe several days and perhaps save money. To do this you need a Eurail pass and a little long-term planning. That's how it works. With a Eurail Pass you can go from downtown to downtown in Europe in great comfort at a reasonable price.
The key is the downtown phrase 'the downtown.
Paris considered. The Charles de Gaulle Airport is located 23 km north-east of Paris. If you go by taxi in both directions the cost of national debt and lasts 45 minutes. There are regular buses and trains but your journey will never be less than 45 minutes. Leaving, you have to pass security by airlines and want there well before takeoff. At least one hour, sometimes two hours.
Thus, on any flight until you find that six hours, never less than four, are spent go to the airport, check flight, and achieve recovery of your baggage. Then go to the center of your destination.
By train, in every capital in Europe (I have searched and found no exception) you arrive in the center city.
Yes, you need to train station ten minutes before the train leaves – he is fifteen minutes to be on the safe side – and when you to your destination, it is the immediate arrival. Your luggage is with you and you're there, bang in the center of the city. To test this stay Paris for the moment.
At Easter – one of the busiest times of the year for Paris – I arrived at the Gare de l'Est, one of the main stations of Paris. In the station was the tourist help desk – every station in Europe has a help desk.
Once I explained what I wanted – a bit expensive (as in less than 50 euros per night) room in a hotel near Place de la Republique with a view over the rooftops Paris. And I was able to confirm it in ten minutes and will happily on my way. (By the way, was the most romantic room I never been in a hotel anywhere and this was Paris in the spring and the chestnuts are in bloom and, alas, I was alone.)
On this trip I made from Salerno in Sicily via Italy and then France, Spain to Barcelona to ask the work of Gaudi, back Greece again in Germany in Mainz. I had a long way to go and this was the best and least expensive and most enjoyable. I saved a lot of time and a lot of money.
(And if you're interested in old motorcycles you should know that I spent my birthday touring Sicily on a 350cc Royal Enfield which was an exact replica of the sixties model but made in Madras. I have hired the 500 cc model but thought that going a little higher.)
You will usually be treated with relatively short travel – Paris to Lyon two hours, Amsterdam to Cologne three hours, Geneva to Paris three years and a half hours and so on – and these will be pleasurable experiences because the trains are fast, comfortable (especially in first class) and wonderfully quiet.
The best examples of modern trains of Europe are the trains of the TGV France, which are part of the Euro City.
I am writing this while I travel on the TGV Express – TGV stands for train a Grande Vitesse, which translates, roughly, the high speed train – from Paris to Avignon. The calm – we are running on tires – is disturbing. This is first class, and there is a configuration with three seats in the carriage – two and one. I'm the only seat which is adjustable and comfortable.
There is a table pointing down, which rests my computer.
We are now pinching the outskirts of Paris to over 200 kilometers per hour. Eventually we will reach our cruising speed maximum, which is over 270 kilometers per hour. There is no domination, no rattling, no fall, and no shock.
A gentleperson transport for the grand tour of Europe.
For trains between big cities, the best paris trains are super fast, as the name (oh, the romance in the names) Catalan Tago, Maria Theresa, Voltaire, Leonardo da Vinci, Etoile du Nord. They are very fast and are almost never late.
Sometimes you will use the train only as high-speed, economical and comfortable transport, but other times the train ride can be a trip well.
Bernina Switzerland, the Bergen Express in Norway, and the rail Laws in France are examples where the journey is part of the resort.
Important points to remember:
• Keep in mind that Europeans very significantly using a clock of 24 hours in this kind. It's five hours of the afternoon becomes 1700 hours and half past nine in the evening is 2130. Easy once you get the hang of it.
• Once you begin your journey by train, you must have your Eurailpass validated, for which you must show your passport. Do it before boarding a train at the information window of any fairly large station. You receive your return ticket and a validation slip.
• Keep your validation slip separate from the sale of tickets. It is proof of ownership. (If you worry wart like me, make a photocopy of both straight away and do not forget the copy in the lining of your suitcase.)
• Make sure go to the upright. Every city in Europe has several different railway stations. This TGV train I ride started from Gare de Lyon in Paris. But there are six other stations Train outline in this city of light. The concierge at your hotel to advise you.
• When you arrive at the station make sure you get on the platform right in the right car. The signs are always clear and the staff of the railways are still the most useful. There will be a board confirming the name, number and departure time of train at the entrance to the platform when you get there.
• Getting into the right car, rather than the right gear is essential, in modern trains it is the car that is sent by computer control to its destination. On the side of each car is an identification sign tells you the number of the car where the car is heading and the names of the most important stops on the road. Check panel carefully and, if you're still in doubt, show your ticket to the driver of the train and explain exactly where you go.
• Limits. A Eurail Pass is for x number of trips over a period of time. Do not waste the pass on short trips.
Example: I was in Nice and had to go to Cannes. I went by train and bought a ticket. You do not waste your Eurail Pass on journeys on trips that take less than an hour.
• Ubiquity. Every station seems to have a Eurail booking desk. Be organized and try to book as far as you can, if you want a sleeper. These trains will be full especially during the holiday season, and the sooner you book, the more you are sure to get the right train.
• Sleeping on the train. If This is a very long journey take the evening train and sleep on board. On a first class Eurail Tickets the sleeper is part of the package.
This has advantages. It saves you the cost of one night's accommodation and it gets what could be a pretty long trip more comfortable and considerable style. For example, I went from Salerno in Sicily to the leg of Italy to Genoa and did it on a night train and I slept like a baby.
Be careful.
There is a story of a passionate young couple who used their bed not sleeping. In a moment of ecstasy the young hung like a madman at the nearest object. Unfortunately, it was the communication cord to stop emergency.
• If possible, take your own snacks. There was a thought in my mind that food on European trains would be a pleasure gourmets. From my experience, it is very far away. On the other hand, almost all station restaurants good food at prices very reasonable if you stay away from fast food chains.
• Get the right stop. As you come into a city make sure you do not stop at a stop commuter who usually stop before the station. If in doubt, ask the inspector Tickets or custody. No need to be able to speak the language. Just show your ticket and they will tell you what to do.
• Travel light. If you can not easily carry your baggage you are stuffed. Porters do not exist. Not at any station I've ever seen.
• Use all the passes. When you plan your itinerary, be bold. You can go from Greece to Oslo and almost everywhere other between the two.
• Not in the United Kingdom. All this applies to Europe except Great Britain. A Eurail Pass does not work there. Great Britain is not part of Europe. Whatever made you think otherwise?
Sites that can help …
Eurail: It argues rightly, that it is the only official Eurail. This is true. But this is not the only site that can give you information. And it is certainly not the only site that can sell you tickets. It is, however, make a very good starting point because from here you can sort of timings possible and routes.
Europe: This is not the official site, but it could equally well be regarded as such. There is nothing about Eurail that do not know.
Europe by Eurail: Again, this is a commercial enterprise selling tickets, but that does not have a load of useful information on the site.
Boots N 'All Travel: Would you buy a ticket from a company with such a name? Let us not be a snob. He has great expertise on Eurail and its site is very useful.
