Eurail pass 1st class vs. 2nd class?

I’m planning to go all over europe next summer and i’m trying to decide on a rail pass. money is not really a problem at the moment but i want to be as frugal as i can so if anyone can tell me what exactly i get with each class id appreciated it.

for example do i get a bed and meal with either or both of them? how big is the difference.

The only trains on which there are beds you would need to make a reservation for and pay an additional amount for (even if you have the pass). This is also true for high speed trains.

There isn’t a big difference between 1st and 2nd class. From what I’ve seen, the seats are a bit bigger in 1st, and usually covered with a “nicer” material. The luggage rack that’s above the seats (it’s a communal one, not an individual compartment) may also be able to fit slightly bigger bags. Also, since fewer people buy 1st class tickets/passes, you may have an easier time finding the seat you like on a crowded train.

2nd class is perfectly comfortable. I’ve always ridden it, what I know about first class is just what I’ve seen by looking at the first class car. Its never been a problem for me to find a nice seat in 2nd class.

On trains where there is a dining car, both 1st and 2nd class have access to it. But, most of the trains I’ve been on didn’t have any meal service/dining car. I know that there is no complimentary meal in 2nd class, and I think that’s true for 1st as well.

If you’ll only be staying in a few cities, it may make more sense to buy individual tickets.
