How flexibible is the Eurail Global Pass?

I think to buy the Eurail Global Pass. Have you set when you want to travel from one place to another, or can you present to the station and board the train?

LaFeeFan is right. Here in Italy you could see very well and hop on a train with your Regional pass, but one of the high-speed trains higher (Intercity, Eurostar Alta Velocita, TBiz or overnight trains require supplement / reservation. You must go to the window in a station to do so before boarding the train. There is a sizeable fine if you do not above specifications. In general, tickets are available at the time of departure, but there are certain times where it may be difficult to simply present and jump on a train. Typically, the week of Easter each side requires reservations on most trains other than regional trains because of heavy volume. The long weekend (a "punter" here), trains can be very full to the south on Thursday night or Friday and Sunday to the north. For example, December 8th is a holiday here and the trains will be packed. During this period, trains to the Christmas markets of Northern will also very complete. You should also consider whether a Eurail pass is a benefit for you or not. You must schedule at least a rough track and calculate the costs including password all surcharges (using the links provided LaFeeFan). Compare this to the ticket price point to point on individual websites train countries (search for "Train" and name of country). There are often discounts available if you buy the ticket at least one day in advance. For example, here in Italy there an "Amica" fare on most high speed trains higher saving up to 20% off the normal price.
